What “extinguishing a light” actually means…

In chapter 908 we see the Gorosei ask Imu what “light” they want extinguished from history. Earlier we saw Imu choosing between 4 pictures: Luffy, Blackbeard, Shirahoshi and Vivi.

Imu destroyed the first three pictures, and then left the garden with Vivi’s photograph, so it’s safe to assume she’s the chosen light.

Now, most of us assumed at the moment that “extinguishing a light from history” means killing Vivi, but I think there’s another possiblity worth considering. What if the World Government isn’t actually planning on killing Vivi, but having her marry a Celestial Dragon? This may sound silly at first, but I think there’s some evidence that supports this idea over the assasination theory:

What would be accomplished by simply killing Vivi? On the one hand, if the assassination is made public, it would absolutely demolish the trust other kingdoms have in the World Government, as it would expose that they’re willing to murder a member of the royalty without any remorse, ultimately destroying the idea of all kingdoms being equal with no supreme leader on top of them. On the other hand, making Vivi’s death look like an accident still doesn’t seem to accomplish anything because she doesn’t seem to be a threat to the World Government’s plans by herself, at least not compared to Luffy and Blackbeard (renown pirates) or Shirahoshi (an Ancient Weapon), so unless the World Government knows something about Vivi that even she doesn’t know, I think there’s worth considering other possibilities.

Why did Imu choose Vivi? I think there are two obvious explanations here. So, right before the final scene of chapter 908 we see the Gorosei talking about Cobra, and how the Alabasta kingdom was the only one that remained on the surface when the World Government was founded, which essentialy makes them traitors. This way, forcing Vivi, princess of Alabasta, marry one of the World Nobles would not only mean having control over Alabasta’s present, but also its future. Basically, in the eyes of the World Government this would be a way of turning this traitor kingdom into an ally, which would help mainting balance in the world. The second possibility lies in the secrets that Alabasta holds. We know that Alabasta holds the Poneglyph that points towards the location of Pluton, another one of the Ancient Weapon. The country might even be the very location of the Weapon. This way, taking control over Alabasta so they can unveil it’s secrets might also be what the World Government wants.

I think if this theory turns out to be true, there’s already some foreshadowing within the story. In Chapter 823, when we saw Vivi heading towards the Reverie it was mentioned by King Cobra how she was already in the age of getting married and how there would be potential suitors for her at the Reverie, while Vivi showed no interest. Then, in Chapter 907 we see how a Celestial Dragon can freely choose whoever they want as a wife, even a princess, without giving them any chance of refusing, as the Nobles are protected by CP-0, the strongest of all Cipher Pol units.

If this is where the story goes, I can see Vivi resisting by trying to run away, Leo and Sai fighting the other Celestial Dragons with support from Mjosgard. Maybe the Revolutionary Army’s imminent attack will serve as a distraction, or they might even help Vivi.
